autumn in the works…

It is…an idea which I would always have theoretically admitted—the idea that I, or any mortal at any time, may be utterly mistaken as to the situation he is really in. Five senses; an incurably abstract intellect; a haphazardly selective memory; a set of preconceptions and assumptions so numerous that I can never examine more than a minority of them—never become even conscious of them all. How much of total reality can such an apparatus let through?–C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed

leslie and i went out on a Photography Expedition saturday. her camera broke before we left home. mine followed in retirement shortly after the first shutter closure. i have a new wide angle/fisheye lense and need to use it. soon. no, sooner. such a disappointment i had to remedy my bitterness with a long, quiet walk through clifton gorge. the leaves are just beginning to sense the need for flight deep inside their veins. their yearly pinnacle. they know to jump and find joy in the falling. i walked beside the stream, over the rocks, under the trees and there is healing for all there. in deep breaths. and in between.

i find myself drawn closer to my God of humor who knows me more than i may even know myself. autumn is upon us(!), the 9 month wait is over and i’ve found myself both overjoyed in the beauty of nature’s lifecycle and pinned to the earth, scattered in thought, deep in the heart of …education. a Divinely scheduled autumn during which i will traverse the most demanding quarter of the program. i see that autumn this year will be a question of how (if) i will continue to crawl closer to Him in all my business, frustrations, demands. That, or it will be a sweet and beautuful refuge of a gentle season to sustain my (often)broken spirit.

things i love today:
the God of provision, grace, compassion
a husband of provision, grace, compassion
hearing Amanda’s voice from Africa
homemade nan from Chad
blueberries
rain
friendship and laughter with Leslie
the spiritual discipline of silence, solitude
pomegranate green tea
Carli’s very pregnant belly
crunching leaves on the sidewalk
pumpkin pie!

“By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet.”-Thomas Merton
